A Journey in Reading 2013

I rediscovered my passion.

My imagination was reignited and I enjoyed every page of it.

It began with a little book called Unenchanted by author Chanda Hahn. The story of a young girl now emerging into adulthood, discovering her destiny and fighting to stay alive while protecting those she loves. The story intrigued me and I have the wonderful writing skills of Ms. Hahn to thank for that. Of course I had to read the rest of the Unfortunate Fairtytale series.....of course. Great writing added to great storytelling and great characters always keeps me interested. Then, when I thought it couldn't get any better I started reading The Iron Butterfly, again by Chanda Hahn, and the rest is history. Well, the rest is really hours and hours of intentional seclusion, sleepless nights, long snugly weekends and lots and lots of delightful surprises.

Enter Veronica Roth. Knowing virtually nothing about the author and her debut novel Divergent, I dived in and read till my eyeballs were sore and daylight was long forgotten in lieu of more darkened, sequestered reading bliss. What can I say, I don't like being interrupted. I read Insurgent next and waited in agony with thousands of others for the release of Allegiant. After reading, I bawled like a baby. It was the end of a journey, traveled alongside characters I had learnt to love, some I loved to hate and others I hated to say goodbye to. Plus, the ending was total and utter crap, with the biggest of unexpected shockers. I loved it all!

After these adventures I found I had enjoyed the series format most stories were told in. So I followed the thread and found Delirium. The story blurb intrigued me. The concept of a world where love was illegal made my spidey-book senses tingle. I wasn't disappointed. I read all three book in the series. Back to back to back. Granted I experienced and slight slump in my reading speed between books two and three. Though I blame it on the sheer awesomeness of it all. I was in happiness overload and honestly needed an eyeball resting period. However that break did not diminish the experience and I ended Requiem wanting more......I connected with these characters. I saw their world so clearly and attributed it to Lauren Oliver's crazy amazing writing skills and imagination. I will miss that world, those characters and the sleepless nights enjoying it all.

So the end of 2013 approaches and my reading's back up to speed. I'm hungry for more. More was exactly what I got in Angelfall by author Susan Ee. firstly, to be quite honest, the author's name was the first thing to catch my eye. Then the cover art for the book I found very appealing in a dark, graphic yet simplistic way. I read a few reviews, which is
something I rarely do, but I did anyway. I have a friend, who's also an avid reader, who suggested the title without giving away much about the story line. Granted, she did not like it. And in the end I decided to gave it a read. I. Loved. It. It was rather refreshing. The post-apocalyptic world I was thrust into where Angels had fallen to the earth and raged war against the 'human rats' held me captive. The heroine is kick-ass and yet so vulnerable at the same time. The hero is reluctant and moody and also kick-ass. AND, there is humor! I haven't chuckled, giggled, LOL-ed like that in ages. And there was the added 'Aha' moments and the Scifi intrigue that made it exciting and unforgettable. I also haven't cringed, slapped my forehead and closed my eyes in sheer disgust in ages like that too. Fun, fun, fun! I don't think I've even recovered from it all yet. While currently reading book two, World After, I will try to reign in my excitement........for now.

In conclusion, I will say that whether good or bad, I enjoy all books. I can always appreciate a unique story, a thwarted-twisty tale and yes, surprising sucker-punch-to-gut endings. I will remain a fan of them all.

2014, here I come!
